Dragon eggs are nearly impervious to damage and they can take centuries to hatch. This means that very few dragon mothers are in the area when the wyrmlings finally break free. Chromatic dragons are known for scattering their eggs far and wide, placing them near easy prey the hatchings will be able to hunt by themselves.
